2 min read

Thinking about earning your GED but worried about the cost? You are not alone! Many adults want to earn their high school equivalency credential but aren't sure how much testing costs or where to begin.

The good news is that you can take the GED one subject at a time, and help may be available to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.

How Much Does the GED Cost?

Michigan's GED testing fees are charged per subject. At the listed rate of $43.50 per subject, taking all four tests would cost $174 before any applicable retakes or other fees.

Here is the breakdown:

  • Mathematical Reasoning: $43.50

  • Reasoning Through Language Arts: $43.50

  • Science: $43.50

  • Social Studies: $43.50

You do not have to take all four tests on the same day. You can prepare for each subject individually and schedule your exams as you feel ready.

Testing fees and retake policies can change, so check the official Michigan GED testing information before scheduling your exam.

What Are the Four GED Tests?

1. Mathematical Reasoning

This test covers algebra, geometry, percentages, basic math, graphs, and problem-solving. If math has been a challenge in the past, practice and tutoring can help you build confidence.

2. Reasoning Through Language Arts

This test focuses on reading comprehension, grammar, analyzing written information, and writing an extended response. You'll practice understanding passages and using evidence to support your answers.

3. Science

The science test includes life science, physical science, Earth and space science, and interpreting scientific information. You'll need to understand charts, graphs, and evidence to answer questions.

4. Social Studies

This test covers U.S. history, civics and government, economics, geography-related information, and historical documents. Critical thinking and reading comprehension are important skills for this subject.
