Cristina came to the Family Literacy Center Lapeer office in 2025, with hopes of earning her GED and continuing on to higher education. She left high school after struggling with math difficulties and having trouble concentrating and retaining information. Traditional school settings weren’t working — but she refused to stay stuck. Determined to build a better future, Cristina walked into Family Literacy Center motivated and ready to learn. She showed up on time for every testing session and tutoring appointment, embracing support with incredible willingness. While working with our JMG (Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates) program, she decided to get her nursing degree and esthetician license. Today, she is actively applying to college programs, with her eyes set on becoming a medical spa nurse. Her goal? To combine clinical care with aesthetic services to help others feel confident and cared for — turning her own journey of resilience into a career of healing.
Cristina’s story proves it’s never too late. With motivation, the right resources, and consistent effort, barriers become breakthroughs.
If you or someone you know is ready for a fresh start — whether it’s GED prep, college transitions, or family learning — our doors are open.
Congratulations, Cristina! We’re so proud of you and can’t wait to see you thrive.
