P.A.C.T. -- PARENTS &
CHILDREN TOGETHER Activities
Game from Part 1: Go Fish
| Reason |
Helps a child learn new words. |
| Materials |
Index cards cut in half |
| Preparation |
Write vocabulary words on cards. Write each word on two different
cards. Use words for your child's reading level;
EXAMPLES:
- write a color word on one card and make a crayon mark of
that color on another card
- write word family words (fish, wish - come, some - fun, sun)
on cards
- write upper case (capital) letters on one set of cards with
cards to match with lower case (small) letter.
|
| Procedure |
- Shuffle the cards. Deal out seven cards (or less depending
on the number of players). Leave some cards for the "Go
Fish " pile. Players should check their cards to see if
any matches were dealt to them. Players that have matches should
say the words and lay the matching pair down in front of them.
- The first player then asks any of the other players for a
word they have in their hands. If the player asked does not have
the word he/she says "go Fish" and the player must
take one card from the "Go Fish" pile. If the card
drawn from the pile is the word that was asked for, the player
takes another turn. Play then continues around the table. The
player with the most matches wins.
- NOTE: Adults should make sure each child is saying each word
correctly and is receiving the correct word card.

Activity from Part 2: Make
the Headlines!
| How to Make: |
Find short newspaper
articles or cut out pictures with captions. Cut the headline
from the article or the caption from the picture. Mark them in
some way so you will know which headline or caption match which
article or picture. |
| How to Play: |
The child reads the
article or looks at the picture and writes a headline or caption
to go with it. He then compares his headline or
caption with the real one. The goal is not to match the real
one exactly, but to be able to write a good, new headline or
caption with the information they can understand from the article
or picture. |
