P.A.C.T. -- PARENTS &
CHILDREN TOGETHER Activities
Game from Part I: Cut Aparts
| Reason: |
To provide practice with matching
pictures with beginning letter sounds with word cards. |
| Materials Needed: |
Index cards, pictures (can be drawn,
also) |
| Preparation: |
Design cards with matching letter / picture combinations.
Cut apart each card in an irregular pattern, leaving one item
on each piece.
|
| Procedure: |
Spread the pieces around on a table.
The players try to make matches and then put the pieces together
to check their selection. Players in a group take turns and keep
those that match. The player with the most matches wins. |
Activity from Part II: Key
Word Diagrams
| Reason |
Noting key words and understanding
the relationship among ideas helps develop comprehension. Being
able to manipulate the cards can help a student clarify his or
her thinking. |
| Materials |
Short story, newspaper or
magazine article, six to ten blank word cards (1" x 3")
and felt tip marker or pen |
| Preparation |
Gather materials |
| Procedure |
- Read a story or article to your student or have your student
read it.
- Ask the student to retell the story in his or her own words.
- As the student is retelling the story, listen carefully for
key story characters, key places, key events, and key circumstances.
Write these key words on the blank cards.
- When the student finishes the retelling, ask him or her to
move the cards to make a diagram or word picture of the story.
Any diagram is acceptable; there are no wrong answers!
It is important that the student apply the facts read in the
story to building the story picture. As the student moves and
arranges the word cards, he or she should verbalize the reasoning
involved in the process.
