Become a Student

The Family Literacy Center provides tutoring help for both children and adults. Adults meet for about two hours with our staff to exchange information.  We will ask for information about how we can best help the adult learner and was will ask the student to complete some work that will help us decide where to start. The student can talk about goals or things they would like to work on to gain skills. Adult learners in our program become successful at home, at work and in their community. Trained tutors are matched with adult learners. They will meet in a public place.

Children in our after school tutoring program are referred to us by their school's Learning Coach. The six-week sessions meet twice a week for an hour and a half. Parents must also agree to attend one or more of our family programs offered during the six week session. Trained volunteers are matched with students and a Family Literacy Center staff person is always on site to advise and supervise at the sessions.

How to Become a Child Student

Many parents are not sure how to help their children succeed in school.  However, with training and support, they can become more involved in home learning activities and have a chance to help their children succeed.  The Family Literacy Center, in partnership with the Lapeer District Library offer free tutoring to help your child succeed.

How to Become an Adult Student

The Family Literacy Center offers free and confidential, one-to-one help for adults who want to read, write, spell, or speak English better.

Tutoring is available at flexible times and locations and is based on the student's goals.
