About Us

The Family Literacy Center is a 501(c) non-profit organization offering family programs designed to help Lapeer County familes who are concerned about the level of literacy in their homes. Since 1980, the Family Literacy Center has worked to provide resources to these familes to help them improve literacy in the community.  The Family Literacy Center provides assistance through trained volunteer tutors who work one-on-on with adults who have low-level reading, writing, and spelling skills. The close connection established by using the one-on-on approach produces amazing results at improving the literacy of an individual.

The Lapeer Family Literacy Center is governed by the Lapeer Country Board of Directors, and receives funding from both the State of Michigan, and from local community partners.

Our mission has always been to enrich lives through literacy within the community.

Please reference the links below for information about both the Board of Directors, and our local partners.

They work together in order to both pair child students with capable tutors, and to schedule Family Program workshops that teach parents ways to improve their child's literacy.

Mary Bond

Office Manager

Mary is in charge of the office operations at the Family Literacy Center.  She makes sure the office is fully stocked with the nessecary supplies to assist in improving literacy.  Mary also fields lots of the phone calls, and takes donations over the phone. We often receive information requests for other services in Lapeer County so Mary and the rest of the Family Literacy Center staff responds to these calls or suggests other agencies in Lapeer who may be able to help the caller. She also schedules appointments, manages day to day office operations, and takes care of many other valuable tasks that must be done.
