through literacy in the Lapeer County area.
Services
The Family Literacy Center is a 501(c)3
non-profit organization offering programs designed to help
Lapeer County families who are concerned about the level of
literacy in their homes and are looking for resources to help
them.
The Center provides assistance through
trained volunteer tutors who work one-to-one with adults who
have low-level reading, writing, and spelling skills.
Tutors are also available for English as a
Second Language (ESL) students. A Workplace Literacy
program is available for adult workers who need to improve their
literacy skills to cope with increased reading and writing
demands on the job.
TUTORING SERVICES ARE FREE
AND CONFIDENTIAL
Eligibility Criteria - Adult Literacy
Program:
Be a resident or employee in
Lapeer County.
Be at least 17 years old.
Be reading and/or writing on
less than an 8th grade level.
Agree to meet at an approved
tutoring site.
Be able to get to the
tutoring site without assistance from the Family Literacy
Center or the tutor.
Be able to attend to tasks
for at least thirty minutes.
Be willing to attend weekly
sessions of at least 1 hour per week year-round.
Demonstrate appropriate behavior at the initial
interview:
*appropriate personal hygiene *appropriate
language *positive behavior patterns
