The Literacy Center Camel Races were featured in an article in Lit Scope Magazine for Summer of 2004. Here are some excerpts from that article that explain what the camel races are all about.

"The event is held in the evening and includes dinner and a casino-like atmosphere. In 2003, the fourth year of the fund-raiser, 275 people attended and the Family Literacy Center cleared $10,000."

"Each year, the literacy council offers 24 "camels" for sale to sponsors. The sponsors creatively decorate the camels-- four foot tall plywood cutouts mounted on wheeled bases- to represent their business or organization."

"The camel race is like a life -sized board game, with local celebrities tossing giant fuzzy dice to determine how many spaces the camels can move. Six camels compete at a time and must move forward 10 spaces. The first camel that reaches the finish line wins."

"What makes the camel race different from other events is that it's built around the sponsors Shelton-Wiese (Literacy Center Director), adds. "In most fund-raisers, sponsors might get a sign at the back of the room or a mention in the program," she says. "This actually brings recognition to the sponsors because people are cheering for them. It's a really cool thing and a fun fund-raiser. It's like planning a big party, and everyone has a great time."

If you are interested in attending this fun event, becoming a sponsor or joining our committee, please contact Mary Shelton-Wiese, Executive Director at (810) 664-2737 or e-mail us at ican@readlapeer.org

The Family Literacy Center Benefit Auction

The Literacy Center Benefit Auction was held on Friday, April 21, 2006 at the Lapeer Country Club. Visit the picture page link at the top of the page to see highlights of the auction and dinner.

The funds raised at the benefit auction are used to support the center. It helps us pay the rent, buy books, evaluate students, recruit tutors and train parents to help their children learn to read.

Each year around February, the Family Literacy Center holds our most successful fund raiser, the Benefit Auction and Dinner. It has been held since 1993 at several different locations including Lum International Golf Course, Metamora Golf and Country Club, Whaley Historical House, Copeley Hill Executive Retreat, the Lapeer Country Club, and the MICOA Insurance Building. A fabulous gourmet dinner and scrumptious appetizers are enjoyed by our guests. Tickets to the event have been in high demand over the last few years and seating is limited.

Auction items include unique, high-quality objects d'art, trips, services, dinners, one of a kind pieces, hand-crafted furniture, autographed items and specialty items (bikes, tools, garden items, electronic equipment and more). The vast majority of our auction donations come from local merchants, artists and individuals. We could not hold this event without their generosity! Thank you to our donors!

If you're interested in donating a unique item to this fun fund raiser or in attending this event, please e-mail us at  ican@readlapeer.org. We'd love to see you there!
