Welcome to the Family Literacy Center Website! Since 1980, the Family Literacy Center has provided free, one-to-one tutoring for adults who live to or work in the Lapeer County area and want to read, write or speak English better. We also offer several workshops for families to help children develop good reading skills. We are now offering tutoring for children in the Lapeer County area in targeted school groups. This program has been made possible through a grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. The Family Literacy Center and the Lapeer District Library are partners for literacy in Lapeer County.
Mission Statement Building skills and enriching lives through literacy in the Lapeer County area. Services The Family Literacy Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization offering programs designed to help Lapeer County families who are concerned about the level of literacy in their homes. The Center provides assistance through trained volunteer tutors who workone-to-one with adults who have low-level reading, writing, and spelling skills. Tutors are also available for English as a Second Language (ESL) students. A Workplace Literacy program is available for adult workers who need to improve their literacy skills to cope with increased reading and writing demands on the job. Fundraising Family Literacy Center have many fundraisers throughout the year both to promote literacy awareness, and to raise funds to start new programs. Each year in April, the Family Literacy Center holds our most successful fund raiser, the Benefit Auction and Dinner. It has been held since 1993 at several different locations including Lum International Golf Course, Metamora Golf and Country Club, Whaley Historical House, Copeley Hill Executive Retreat, the Lapeer Country Club, and the MICOA Insurance Building. A fabulous gourmet dinner and scrumptious appetizers are enjoyed by our guests. Tickets to the event have been in high demand over the last few years and seating is limited. Enthusiastic racers helped the Family Literacy Center to raise over $17,000 at the 2011 Camel Races. At this event, more than twenty-four area sponsors decorated wooden racing camels to represent their business or organization and “race” to the toss of the big, fuzzy dice. Guests bet on their favorites and awards are given for “best-dressed” camel. Sponsors are talking now about next year's winners and what it will take to mount an all-out effort to be the best of the best, so call us today at 810-664-2737 ALL TUTORING SERVICES ARE FREE AND CONFIDENTIAL! ~Generous Donors & Volunteers Make It All Possible~
